Hive Cooperative is

a branding exercise for an onboarding

kit for beginner beekeepers.

The app, designed to help beekeepers get started, troubleshoot issues, and ship their honey, is made in a cheerful, paper-and-ink style to reflect the warmth and goals of the organization.

THE PROCESS

Once the Hive Cooperative concept was established, deliverables were determined and a few different graphic styles applied.

This project involved the creation of an app interface, a promotional video, a logo, and labeling, but the process involved much more! See it below, or check out the video and motion graphics elements.

The project began with the development of a promotional exhibit, for which I made posters and other ephemera to nail down a concept and a graphic style.

The poster series above explored the use of lettering made from honey-like corn syrup, while the app screens at left explored a few different looks for the app interface.

Pen-and-ink illustrations combined with pattern and papercutting won out as the ideal style for the Hive Cooperative deliverables.

I love hand lettering and funky illustrations. They add a character that is so different from flat illustration styles and modern type, and a distinct bespoke quality.
